Halloween Horror Story: Lou Reed and Metallica’s Lulu

We don't usually review music, but in the spirit of Halloween I want to share with you one of the most horrifying things you can ever hear, one of the most disgusting, frightening aural atrocities in the history of bass drums, one of the cosmic abominations seeping out of the seams of the universe that brings gibbering madness with its perception. I want to share with you Lulu, by Lou Reed and Metallica.

This year, Lou Reed of the Velvet Underground and Metallica collaborated on an album based on two turn-of-the-century plays by German playwright Frank Wedekind. It's exactly as pretentious and uninteresting as it sounds. Before I heard about Lulu, I thought Lou Reed was dead. Now that I've heard Lulu, I kind of wish he was.

Simply put, Lulu doesn't sound like a collaboration between music legends Lou Reed and Metallica. It sounds like a collaboration between a high school poetry nerd and a crappy Stone Temple Pilots cover band. I could do a track-by-track analysis, but I'm not a music reviewer, and this isn't a music site. Instead, behold the wonder of this horrible album on the web page, where you can listen to it for free.

You're welcome.

Fun With Science: Get Portal 2′s Soundtrack For Free, “Peer Review” DLC Coming Out Wednesday

Hey, check it out. Free music. Specifically, a free soundtrack to Portal 2. More specifically, Valve is offering the complete 64-track soundtrack to Portal 2, "Music to Test By," for free on the Portal web site.

The Portal 2 soundtrack, like every other aspect of the game, was excellent, with some haunting and tense music that reflected both the dark humor and the surreal, clever action of the game's various Aperture Science settings. It had some great electronic and ambient tracks, and listening to any of them will take you back to the shifting walls and grimy pipes of the testing facility. For the record, the two catchy sounds in the Portal 2 commercials are "Science is Fun" and "Halls of Science," both of which are in the soundtrack.

Valve also released a handful of ringtones from the soundtrack and the game's sound effects. There aren't any quotes from GLADoS, Cave Johnson, or Wheatley, but there are portal and button sounds, plus short clips of the more notable tracks in the soundtrack cut for ringtone use. If that's not enough, Valve is also releasing the "Peer Review" DLC for Portal 2 Wednesday. It's free and mostly co-op but with some single-player support. Keep an eye out for it on Steam.

Bob-Omb: Greatest Video Game Music Parody Of The Year

Video game music videos are easy to find on Youtube, but great video game music videos require some hunting. Or, in my case, to have a friend send me a link. It's easier that way. Anyway, this is Insane Ian's "Bob-Omb," a parody of Bruno Mars' "Grenade," and it's really, really good. It's a nearly shot-for-shot remake with Mario themes, the singer actually sounds a lot like Bruno Mars (but slightly less like a total pussy), and the production quality is surprisingly high (with the exception of a few effects that only look just-okay-but-better-than-the-usual-crap-people-come-up-with-on-Youtube. Too many hypens? Okay).

Check it out. And Read on for the original Grenade video, to compare it.

Presidents and Pokemon at the Black and White Launch Event at Nintendo World

Nintendo held a big Pokemon Black and White launch event at the Nintendo World Store at Rockefeller Center on Saturday, and there was much nerding to be had. The Presidents of the United States were there to play a song about the new Pokemon in the game (and, thankfully, to play Peaches and Lump, too), there were big, inflated Pokemon, an opportunity to buy the game a day early, and tons and tons of Pokemon fans. Read on for a full account of the event and tons of photos, taken by both myself and Chris Gampat of The Phoblographer.

Presidents Playing for Pokemon at Nintendo World Store Tomorrow

Well, this is random. Nintendo is holding a Pokemon Black and White launch event tomorrow at the Nintendo World Store at Rockefeller Center. The Presidents of the United States will be there. No, it's not 1996.

Seriously, what else do you need? Great (and strange) band. Pokemon. There should be t-shirts there. GO to Rockefeller Center at 3:00 tomorrow to catch the Prezzes with a new song and get your hands on some Pokemon.

Going to the country, gonna catch a lotta Pikas...

Artists Recording In Simlish for Sims 3 Late Night

"Simlish" is the official language of The Sims. It's what Sims speak instead of English, and it's going to be the language of choice for over two dozen pop, hip-hop, and alternative artists in The Sims 3 Late Night expansion and The Sims 3 Xbox 360/PS3/Wii ports. The Sims 3 Late Night will be getting 18 popular music tracks in Simlish, while the console ports will get a whopping 21 songs, from artists like 3oh!3, Flo Rida featuring Jovi, Mickey Fatz, and My Chemical Romance. The songs will be rerecorded in Simlish, so Sean Foreman and Gerard Way will be crooning their bands' songs in vaguely French-sounding mumbling.

I'd honestly take offense at this, if anyone of the music was good. Fortunately, the tracks are all from autotuned pop bands with z's in their names, or guys like Souja Boy or My Chemical Romance. Incidentally, My Chemical Romance uses lyrics that are far too interesting and violent for the quality of music. They sound like a bunch of wussy douchebags, so why do they keep talking about things like murder and poison? Bah, kids these days. Let me know if George Fisher or Glen Benton re-record any of their bands' songs in Simlish.
