Tron: Legacy: Slightly Punk, Mostly Daft
28 years ago, Tron hit theaters to generally negative reviews and disappointing box office returns. By all measures, it was a flop. However, it was visually stunning and computer-heavy in a time when the few tech-savvy users around were still clacking away on text terminals. It became a cult hit, beloved by geeks everywhere. Now, almost 3 decades, several video games, a handful of online memes, and a few terrible Korean rip-off animations, Tron finally gets a sequel in the form of Tron: Legacy.
Reactions have been mixed, but the best I can say about this film is that it suffers and benefits from the Starship Troopers effect. It's not a good movie, but it's entertaining as hell if you switch your brain off and just stare at it. If you like eye and ear candy and don't care about things like "acting" and 'storytelling," Tron: Legacy is freaking awesome. That should tell you all you need to know, but for a more in-depth look at the film, hit the jump.
Dissidia 012[duodecim]: Final Fantasy Japanese Release Shows a Hopeful Trend
Normally, we don't report on Japanese release dates here at Aggrogate, because, hey, we're not in Japan. That being said, it's worth noting the release of Dissidia 012[duodecim]:Final Fantasy because of one interesting fact. Siliconera reports that the sequel to the PSP only game will be launching Japan on March 3rd and will be coupled with a typical Japanese limited edition PSP; this particular one will come with images of Chaos and Cosmos on it, though no pictures have been released yet. What's most interesting about this is the price: the PSP game will cost 6,090¥ (~$72) in stores, but will only cost 4,980¥ (~$60) on PSN. To my knowledge, most games on PSP have parity for the retail and the digital release and, on occasion, the digital release lags behind the retail, though this occurrence has lessened since the PSN moved to Tuesday releases. As a fan of the digital revolution and a rare lover of the PSPgo, I find this wholly encouraging.
Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep Final Mix Coming… Just Not To America (Trailer)
In a surprising and wonderful policy shift, Square Enix is now putting up the closed theater trailers from TGS. I'm guessing this has something to do with the amount of people sneaking in cell phones so they could leak footage for those of us unable to go to TGS.
The first trailer to come out is for the upcoming Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep Final Mix. Featuring the English vocal track, Final Mix is an expanded version of the PSP game. Final Mix will include a Japan exclusive additional superboss (the armored figure at the end of the trailer), plus a new secret ending trailer. All of that is in addition to the Crown Stickers and second optional boss that were added for the English version. There will also be new fights in the Mirage Arena like the Monstro battle seen in the trailer. Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep Final Mix is set for a January 2011 release.
