Shantae Returns On The DSi October 6

The DSi sequel to beloved GameBoy Color game Shantae finally has a release date. On October 4th, the newest entry in the series will be "ret-2-go!" The original Shantae is a platformer based around a half-genie in charge of protecting Port Town, a small fishing community. After nefarious pirate Risky Boots steals a prototype steam engine, Shantae quests through all of Sequin Land to get it back, utilizing her ponytail as a whip and transforming into various animals. And she belly dances too.

The Shantae series is yet another series that I've felt rather bad for. Despite its quality, it's never gotten the respect it deserves. It came out a good deal after the GameBoy Advance had already taken over as the prime handheld, and the less than amazing sales of the first game did the sequel no favors in getting made. In fact, the sheer existance of this game in a testament to the fanbase and to Shantae creator Matt Bozon. Matt Bozon actually created Shantae in his spare time and also did much work on an unreleased GBA sequel titled Shantae Advance. But due to the low sales of the original, retailers and analysts recommended multiple platformed release or some type of cross-media tie-in.

In a 2007 response to an IGN fanmail, Bozon mentions how they would make a version of Shantae everytime they got a new platform. Shantae has been made "on Gamecube, GBA, DS and Wii, and a few other dabblings in mobile and Plug and Play, and web, and somewhat of a false start on PSP." Nintendo Power had previously revealed that this was the first in a trilogy, though I don't know if this is still true. Hopefully, this eight year lapse will herald a glorious return for the franchise.

Nintendo cutting DS prices by $20; DSi to retail for $149, DSi XL for $169

Nintendo is trimming the prices of its handheld gaming systems, taking $20 off the suggested retail prices of the DSi and DSi XL. Effective September 12, the DSi will retail for $149.99, and the DSi XL will sell for $169.99 (the DSi's current price). The DS Lite will keep its $129.99 price tag and stay on the market, giving us backwards-compatibility-lovers a GBA cartridge port at the expense of DSiWare.

Now, the big question is... who doesn't have a DS yet? Over 130 have been sold worldwide, making it one of the most popular portable gaming systems ever made. Yes, in just 6 years, the DS (and all its iterations) has sold more units than the original Game Boy.

This Week’s Downloads: Shank, Scott Pilgrim (360), Motorstorm 3D, more

This is a great week for fans of cartoony brawlers. Shank is hitting both XBLA and PSN, and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is coming out on XBLA tomorrow. For gamers with 3D HDTVs looking for an excuse to actually break out the shutter glasses, MotorStorm 3D Rift is also coming to PSN tomorrow, featuring 10 tracks from MotorStorm Pacific Rift rendered in 3D-O-Vision. It's like the trees and rocks are coming straight at your head!

On the Nintendo side of things, the biggest release is And Yet It Moves, a fascinating indie physics puzzler that lands on WiiWare today. The Virtual Console gets one more game on its list, a Sunsoft-made side-scroller called Ufouria: The Saga that didn't come out in North America. Finally, the DSiWare gets four new games ranging from the music-making Rytmik to the Farmville-ish My Farm. Full list of this week's downloadable games below.

Nintendo sells 30 million Wiis in US

Nintendo has just reached a pretty big milestone. In less than four years, the company has sold over 30 million Wiis in the United States. According to the company, this cements the Wii as the fastest-selling game console in history.

Globally, the Nintendo Wii has sold over 70 million. Meanwhile, both the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 have only sold 38-42 million across the world, barely 10 million more than the Wii has sold in this country alone. To contrast that with Nintendo's own systems, the SNES sold only 23 million units in its entire lifetime in the U.S., and just 49 million globally. The NES sold over 60 million units globally (U.S. numbers are unavailable).

Despite Nintendo's success and Sony's stumbling in the current generation, the latter company still holds the title for top-selling systems. The Playstation and Playstation 2 respectively sold over 100 and 140 million units in their lifetimes, absolutely wrecking their competitors in their respective generations. Of course, each system spent about a decade in the market, and the PS2 is still available new. The Wii hit its 30 million domestic, 70 million international number in 3 years and 9 months.

Despite these numbers, the Nintendo DS could stand out as the most popular gaming platform of all time, in a year or two. In the span of 6 years, 130 million of the little buggers have sold, and unlike the PS2 the DS is still seeing very strong first- and third-party support. It all depends on how fast the 3DS sees adoption in the market.

Quick Review: Soul of Darkness is for dudes that hate Twilight

Haters of Twilight will be happy to know that you will get to go totally fubar on some real vampires in Gameloft's Soul of Darkness. Available for download from the DSi Store, the game is short but very fun and challenging, especially if you don't pay attention to certain details. The game is actually so fun, that I actually went right ahead and replayed it—which is rare for any downloadable game.
