Fun With Science: Get Portal 2′s Soundtrack For Free, “Peer Review” DLC Coming Out Wednesday
Hey, check it out. Free music. Specifically, a free soundtrack to Portal 2. More specifically, Valve is offering the complete 64-track soundtrack to Portal 2, "Music to Test By," for free on the Portal web site.
The Portal 2 soundtrack, like every other aspect of the game, was excellent, with some haunting and tense music that reflected both the dark humor and the surreal, clever action of the game's various Aperture Science settings. It had some great electronic and ambient tracks, and listening to any of them will take you back to the shifting walls and grimy pipes of the testing facility. For the record, the two catchy sounds in the Portal 2 commercials are "Science is Fun" and "Halls of Science," both of which are in the soundtrack.
Valve also released a handful of ringtones from the soundtrack and the game's sound effects. There aren't any quotes from GLADoS, Cave Johnson, or Wheatley, but there are portal and button sounds, plus short clips of the more notable tracks in the soundtrack cut for ringtone use. If that's not enough, Valve is also releasing the "Peer Review" DLC for Portal 2 Wednesday. It's free and mostly co-op but with some single-player support. Keep an eye out for it on Steam.
Download Your 3DS Ambassador NES Games Now
If you bought your Nintendo 3DS before August 12, you're a 3DS Ambassador and will get 10 NES games now and 10 GBA games later. The NES games are ready now, but like most other things involving Nintendo and any kind of online content, it's a convoluted pain in the ass.
Wouldn't it be nice if you could just tap a "Download 3DS Ambassador games" on the 3DS eStore? Well, you can't. If you want your games, you need to go into the Settings menu, then into Your Downloads. Then you need to do it again and again for each game. On the bright side, the games are free.
The full list of NES games 3DS Ambassadors get are:
- Super Mario Bros.
- The Legend of Zelda
- Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link
- Metroid
- Wrecking Crew
- Balloon Fight
- Ice Climbers
- Yoshi
- Donkey Kong Jr.
- NES Open Tournament Golf
5 Days Left On The Humble Indie Bundle
Do you like indie games? Do you like contributing to charity? Do you like the best savings you'll get short of piracy? Then you'll love the Humble Indie Bundle #3, now into a week of sales and plenty of bonuses added onto the already generous pack. The bundle includes Crayon Physics Deluxe, cogs, VVVVVV, Hammerfight, And Yet It Movies, and Steel Storm (added as a bonus to all packs). And if you spend more than the average of $5.08 (this could change), you get everything in the Humble Indie Bundle #2, which includes Braid, Cortex Command, Machinarium, Osmos, and Revenge of the Titans. And you get to play Minecraft for free until August 14.
You can spend as little or as much as you want on the bundle, and decide exactly who gets what. If you want to support a single developer, that's fine. If you want to put all the money into Child's Play or the EFF, you can do that too. It's a great deal and some good causes.
Netflix now disc-free on PS3 and Wii
Sony's promised Netflix application goes live today, and Nintendo has followed suit, announcing via press release that your Netflix discs are now totally obsolete. The Netflix software is now available as a free download for both consoles, but Sony is quick to point out that their service supports full 1080p video with Dolby 5.1 surround sound. The Wii obviously comes up short in that regard.
The Netflix application doesn't take up very much space on either console, so here's the question I now pose to you: what will you do with your useless Netflix disc? Frisbee? Coaster? Hors d'oeuvres platter? Skeet shoot? Techo-shuriken? Old-timey doctor head mirror? Unfortunately, discs are made of a mix of materials that is beyond the ability of most municipal recycling plants to process easily. There are specialized outfits that will take them for the cost of shipping, but it's obviously more cost effective to wait until you have at least a small boxful of discs before sending it. However, you'll have plenty to ship once the Big Three consoles go to 100% download business model for all their content.
