Duke Nukem Forever to get parody-minded DLC

I went into Duke Nukem Forever with the same sort of mindset that I brought to the Star Wars prequels - there was just no way in hell this thing was ever going to live up to the expectations born from a venerable legend fermented over a decade-plus of fond memories from an entire generation. Even with that philosophical perspective, I found the game underwhelming, although I wasn't quite as crestfallen and hateful as most. I found some entertainment. But I can't help but feel that my biggest disappointment with it was that it was a golden opportunity squandered. The folks who were the most stoked about the game were those who have been gamers for at least the last 15 years, people who know the industry well enough to have already been aware of the unlikely myth-made-reality path this game took to see the light of day. There was your audience, Gearbox, you had the chance to really speak to it through a legend of videogames' history.

Now I look at the DLC plans that Gearbox has, and I'm struck by the notion that this was the general attitude they should have brought to the design of the main game, with the gameplay throwback that was Duke Nukem Forever instead being the content relegated to DLC. The four new maps especially are a sendup of the shooter tropes we all know and love. The glorious urban war zones of Call of Duty, the hellish lava and teleporters of older games like Doom and Quake, the cinematic style and peculiar quirks of Team Fortress 2, and...well, a sandbox. Guess I'm not sure what they're going for with that one, but for the first time since before the game came out, I'm pretty stoked to see where they go with this. If done right, Duke Nukem Forever's tongue-in-cheek, larger-than-life style could strike the perfect tone for parody - using hyperbole and absurdity to make fun of something in a way that speaks to genuine affection for the subject matter. I'm even willing to get my hopes up about it.

No release date has been announced yet, but 2K has announced deathmatches featuring the content will be held at their California headquarters on August 4th.

Dragon Age 2 DLC Out Now, a Week Before the Game Comes Out

Consider the bar raised. EA has frequently in the past offered day-one DLC for some there larger game releases, be it downloadable playable characters such as Shale and Zaeed for Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect 2, respectively, or the very ability to play your game online (see Medal of Honor). It was all part of Project $10, an ongoing effort to combat used game sales by offered ten dollars of free content to anyone who buys a game new via a single-use code in the game packaging. Dragon Age 2 continues the "Thank you for buying this new" trend, with all preorders before January 12th getting an automatic bump up to the Signature Edition.

Apparently, EA's prerelease madness isn't over yet, as you can pick up the first piece of Dragon Age 2 DLC, The Exile Prince, now. As in right now. As in a week before you can play the game (assuming you don't work for someone with a review copy). Yup, EA has released DLC for a game before the game itself. I'd hold off on buying it though, as it may be free with the retail release. (via VG247)

TGS 2010: Dead Rising – Case West

In this epilogue DLC for Dead Rising 2, Chuck Greene is joined by a photographer who's "covered wars, you know." That's right; in Dead Rising: Case West, the previous game's protagonist, Frank West, joins up as another playable character. As you may imagine, the co-op mode now supports one player using Chuck while the other controls Frank. Case West, like Case Zero, will be exclusive to the Xbox 360.

Entering The Lair: Mass Effect 2 Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC Review

[UPDATE] Eurogamer reports that Bioware has fixed the Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC for Xbox 360 and PC. While I appreciate the quick turnaround, the fact remains that they shouldn't have put out broken product. Original review below.

Mass Effect 2 has gained what could easily be the last DLC for the game and it's the largest addition yet. Lair of the Shadow Broker finally bring you face to face with the person who been running things behind the scenes in the Mass Effect universe. But does this hold up to the rest of the series?

DLC Double Shot: Bioware Releasing Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age DLC Next Tuesday

Bioware's releasing two DLC packs for their two biggest games, Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins. Both drop on September 7 and will cost you $10 each. The trailer located above is for this year's critical darling and Game of the Year forerunner, Mass Effect 2. Titled "Lair of the Shadow Broker", this piece of DLC reunites Commander Shepard with one of the possible love interests from the first game, Liara T'Soni. The DLC will take you into the chambers of the mysterious Shadow Broker, a figure that had featured heavily in the periphery of the games and directly in the plot of the Mass Effect: Retribution comic book.

The trailer located after the jump is for last year's Dragon Age: Origins. Taking place after the end of Dragon Age: Origins, this will have you going after one of the party members and finding out just what they've been up to. Any more details would be a spoiler, so if you still haven't finished Dragon Age: Origins, I suggest you avoid the video.
