Capcom Kicks Off Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City AR Game

If you're a Resident Evil enthusiast who's stoked about Operation Raccoon City and looking to kill some time, then Capcom's serving you up some interactive teasing in the form of an AR game (brought to my attention by Eurogamer). Click around for a few seconds on Umbrella Sciences recruitment site, and you'll find all is not as it seems at first glance. But then again, to any Resident Evil fans, it's no surprise to discover a seemingly typical pharma giant has its tentacles in all kinds of conspiracies, shady dealings, and mad science.

Anyway, you'll soon be funneled to the website run by an anti-Umbrella activist group, from where you'll be tasked with an internet scavenger hunt for clues that result in codes, which you take back to the heroic...uh...hackers? As the good citizens of the internet uncover clues, tidbits and info about Operation Raccoon City will become viewable. There are also vague promises of future prizes for diligent detective work. So stop pretending you're actually getting work done at the office right now, and get started on something that's important. The Internet needs these game details, damnit.

Mega Man Legends 3 Cancelled

Andriasang reports that highly anticipated 3DS title Mega Man Legends 3 has been cancelled. This come in spite of the numerous fan contests, promotions, and the planned demo/fund-raising pitch, Mega Man Legends 3 Prototype. According to a message posted on the game's official site, the game was cancelled due to not reaching certain conditions for continuing development, though fan speculation believes that the bigger cause was the desparture of Mega Man creator and Legends 3 project lead Keiji Inafune from Capcom some time ago.

This is quite a blow for the still floundering 3DS, as a number of people, myself included, were looking forward to the return of this franchise considering the second ended with a cliffhanger. It's worth noting that currently, Capcom officially has no Mega Man games in development, so unless Mega Man 11 (or Mega Man X-9) are announced, the franchise might very well be dead.

Capcom releases cast list for Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D

For those unaware, The Mercenaries is a separate sub-game of Resident Evil 4 and 5 that drops the player into a sort of arena in which to rack up a high score stringing together ever-lengthening combos of zombie kills. There's barely any storyline to the action, just a white-knuckled frenzy of strategic, bullet riddled, explosioney, splattery mayhem. I spent more time trying to rack up high scores with all the various characters in The Mercenaries than I did completing the story mode for either 4 or 5.

It seems like a worthy game to stand on its own, and Nintendo is delivering the first Mercenaries-only title for the 3DS. Check the above trailer to see the cast list of familiar faces. Chris's sister Claire, who's been MIA for awhile, is the only character new to Mercenaries action, and she joins her man-mountain, lethal haymaker-punching brother and his partner Jill Valentine, series villain/semi-superhuman Albert Wesker, obligatory spunky school-girl/S.T.A.R.S. medic Rebecca Chambers, mysteriously unkillable Umbrella PMC merc and gas mask fashion model HUNK, rogue supersoldier Jack Krauser, and Resident Evil's hilariously overpowered Epic Beard Man with explosive headbutts, Barry Burton. Sorry Leon, guess you're on the bench for this one.

Mega Man Universe Destroyed; You Got “Project Canceller”

Mega Man Universe was an odd duck from the get-go, and now it appears that Capcom has pulled the plug (andriasang via Giant Bomb), citing "various circumstances." With the XBL and PSN release dates scheduled for Spring 2011, it's tough to say what would make them drop it completely right before launch.

I'm having a hard time deciding just how disappointed I should be. Mega Man 2 was the first game I truly loved, and I miss the classic series something fierce (Mega Man 9 and 10 were a godsend to me). But I never really got a good idea of what Mega Man Universe was supposed to do. It had elements of user-created content to it, but was it going to be just Little Big Planet divided by Mega Man, or was it going to have a story element to it with new bosses and a nefarious new Wily Castle to attack? Was it going to include classic gameplay, but try to shake up the venerable formula at all? What other features would adding an online community bring?

I guess these questions are just academic now. Fans who hungrily waited for Universe will have to take solace in the coming release of Mega Man Legends 3 for the 3DS - if the Legends continuity can even be considered to be Mega Man.

3DStravaganza: Super Street Fighter 4 3D Edition

The Nintendo 3DS comes out this Sunday, and it's pretty awesome. For a full write-up of the system itself, read this review on PCMag.com. For the games, stay right here and check it all out. Nintendo sent six games (Pilotwings Resort, Nintendogs+Cats, Steel Diver, Super Street Fighter 4 3D Edition, Lego Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars, and Madden Football) along with its new handheld, and we just received Namco Bandai's Ridge Racer 3D for an even seven. Over the next week, we're going to look at these games and see how Nintendo's new handheld's launch lineup stands. We're not going to see the Ocarina of Time or Star Fox 64 remakes for a while, nor will we get Kid Icarus: Uprising or the 3D jiggliness of Dead or Alive Dimensions for a few months, so this is what we have to work with. Read on for the very first 3DS game review.

We'll start with the cream of the crop, which surprisingly isn't a first-part Nintendo game. Out of all the 3DS launch titles, Capcom's Super Street Fighter 4 3D Edition stands out as the best, must-have game for the system, combining console-true gameplay with engrossing 3D graphics.

Marvel Vs. Capcom 3: Ultimate Battle of Almost Ultimate Destiny

Marvel Vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds is a pure nerdgasm. I can't attest to how much the game will please fighter purists, but to this barely-more-than-a-button-masher, it's a hoot that's well worth its retail price, and just about worth the wait. Great, accessible mechanics, a huge and varied roster, and loads of nerdy winks make this game a must-have for any fan of the fighting game genre or the comic book medium. Yes, it's been a freaking decade since Capcom put out the last Marvel Vs. Capcom game. Yes, the roster has 20 fewer fighters. Now that it's here, none of that seems to matter. It's a great game by any measure.

It has all the Capcom fighter basics, but with a few streamlined aspects casual players like me, who aren't obsessed with keeping the genre "pure" in its decade-old, frame-counting glory, will appreciate. There are four attack buttons, three light/medium/heavy attacks and a special launcher attack, and everything in the game can be done with a combination of those buttons and the standard fighting came stick motions (quarter-circle,  dragon punch, mash buttons). Honestly, for non-veterans, it's pretty much the same mechanics as Street Fighter 4, Capcom Vs. Tastunoko, and well, basically everything Capcom since the hyper combo was first invented.

Capcom Arcade brings arcade business model to iPhones

Capcom has already successfully ported a respectable list of their classic titles to Apple's App Store, but their newest venture seeks to apply the classic arcade's business model to the digital age. Capcom has launched Capcom Arcade, an app that grants access to four titles - Street Fighter 2, Ghouls 'n' Ghosts, 1942, and Commando (via MTV Multiplayer). The best part is that the app itself is free. As you might expect, however, they are still trying to turn a profit here.

The games are played arcade-style by spending a "token," of which you get three per day. So, theoretically, if three tokens is all you think you'd need in a day, then Capcom Arcade is essentially free mobile gaming for you. However, if you'd like some more leeway with the games, you can purchase another 10 tokens for 99¢ or buy lifetime access to one of the games for $2.99. You might recognize this set-up; Xbox Live's Game Room works in a similar fashion. You can also bone up another 99¢ to unlock cheats and powerups for the games, such as extra lives or more firepower. Now, to me, that kind of defeats the purpose of playing the classics. But I suppose not everyone with an iPhone these days even remembers what arcades were like.

Whether you fork over actual hard-earned cash or not, you're still going to have to put up with some banner ads. Another sign of the times, I suppose.

Marvel Vs. Capcom 3: Yes, Deadpool Can Shoryuken (And Why This Is Awesome)

Capcom held a pre-New York Comic-Con press event on Wednesday, where I got a chance to sit down with Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. I got a feel for the mechanics, got a good look at the graphics, and played with some of the new characters. More importantly, I confirmed the biggest question that's been sitting in my mind since Deadpool was announced for the game: Will Deadpool be able to use a Shoryuken?

I can confirm yes, yes he can. It's an awesome revelation. To find out exactly why it's so great that Deadpool can throw Ryu's signature move, read on for a bit of comic history and a more in-depth preview of the game.
