GOG Goes Really Old School With Zork Anthology For $6

Pull up a chair, children, and let me tell you a story. Long ago, we had these things called text-based adventure games. They were adventure games that-

Okay, okay. Some time ago, we had adventure games. They were point-and-click PC games that-

What are PC games? That's it, get out of my den! I'm taking you little bastards out of my will!

Anyway, GOG.com just added the Zork Anthology to its library. The site calls this release the "most oldschool one in GOG history," and I'm not sure I can argue. The earliest game, Zork, came out in 1980. The latest game, Zork Zero, came out in 1988. It was also the first one to have graphics. It also comes with 1983's Planetfall, a sci-fi text adventure made by Steve Meretzky, who also made Zork Zero and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Sadly, the later, graphical Zork games (Return to Zork through Zork Grand Inquisitor) are not part of the $6 bundle. Still, a buck each for six portals into the adventure games of the early 80s is a pretty great deal.

TGS 2010: Catherine

TGS has brought us the second trailer for upcoming Atlus game, Catherine. In it, we get more details of the delightfully confusing plot of our protagonist Vincent, his girlfriend Katherine with a K, and the mysterious Catherine with a C, who he’s sleeping with. The game’s plot follows our misfortunate hero who, after meeting with the beautiful Catherine, ends up having nightmares about climbing an endless staircase. The random cuts and lack of understanding of Japanese makes it difficult to understand all of what’s happening, but I can share that girlfriend Katherine is making a transition to baby momma Katherine. I somehow think Katherine won't be too happy when she finds out that Vincent has been sleeping with Catherine, though from the look on his face, he seems to be shocked as well. Catherine has been described as having “shockingly adult [sexual] scenes,” something the Shin Megami Tensei games have avoided despite their maturity.

Besides the love triangle and mature situations, Catherine will have its fair share of Persona-style weirdness. Dream demons, blood everywhere, lots of screaming, the works. Besides the strange imagery, Atlus has kept relatively quiet on the gameplay mechanics and supernatural plot aspects of the game. Catherine is the first High Definition game from the Persona team and is coming out this Winter in Japan.

Telltale Games’ Back To The Future To Bring Back The Originals

Telltale Games, the masterminds behind the new Sam & Max, Strong Bad, and Tales of Monkey Island episodic adventure games, is currently working on a new series based on an old property: Back to the Future. Yes, the classic trilogy with the flying Delorean, the mad scientist, and the futuristic world of... 5 years from now.

According to Kotaku, Christopher Lloyd is returning to voice the eccentric Doc Brown, and Back to the Future screenwriter Bob Gale will be on hand to consult for the series. Telltale has also acquired the rights to the likeness of both Micheal J. Fox's Marty McFly and the DeLorean time machine. The games are scheduled to release late this year, after the Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy Blu-ray and DVD packs come out near the end of October.

Friday Flashback: Deja Vu

Nintendo was notorious for censoring potentially offensive or graphic content in its games, especially in the 8-bit and 16-bit days. That's one of the reasons why ICOM Simulations' 1990 release Deja Vu is so impressive. This first-person adventure game, in the same vein as Shadowgate, brings some genuinely gritty and dark storytelling to the NES (the game was released before then on the Amiga, Commodore 64, PC, Apple, and Atari ST).
