Mass Effect is coming to the big screen, for some reason
by Camille Lake

Mass Effect 2 Screenshot

Legendary Pictures has acquired the rights to bring Mass Effect to the big screen. Thomas Tull, who is the producer, said in a statement, “Mass Effect is ripe for translation to the big screen. We already have Mark Protosevich, the writer of I Am Legend, working on a draft of the screen play”.

Well, this all sounds interesting, I guess. I’m sure we’ll all be looking forward to a non-sucking video game movie. However, my hopes are not high.

Sonic in Crisis
by Camille Lake

A while back, I came across The Gameover Thinker, an avid video game fan and amateur filmmaker also known as Movie Bob. He recently partnered with ScrewAttack.com after winning their “My Videos Don’t Suck” contest, and has been reviewing movies for the Escapist for some time. Before this recent partnership with ScrewAttack, Movie Bob made a video two part commentary about Sonic The Hedgehog called, “Sonic In Crisis“.

Wait, wait, I know what you’re thinking What does this clown have to say about Sonic that hasn’t already been said by a 100 other people? What was sure to be nothing more than a ten minute YouTube fanboy rant turned out to be a very clever and well thought-out retrospective on the Sonic franchise as a whole. In part two of the video, he even provides solutions on how to save Sonic and turn the situation around.

The ideas he suggest are excellent. Many of the story idea coming form classic mythology, or Joseph Campbell’s The Hero’s Journey. These basic story elements could be implemented by Sega, at very time and cost. None of which would interfere with Sega’s current plans to bring back a 2D Sonic.

If Sega cares about Sonic, it will make those changes and see them through. I’d love to see Sonic The Hedgehog back on top again, instead of his current position of being cracked-out in the gutter.

Google Gmail Account Hacked, Again.
by Camille Lake

Google has being caught with their pants down, again. In less than one month, I have had my gmail account twice hacked into by the same unknown persons, with IP Address residing some where in China. I am not very happy and I’m sure Google isn’t either.

What is going on over at Google Headquartes? Do the hackers have some sort of *magical doorway* that leads them straight on to the Google servers? Mmmm… well, one can only speculate? But, if I didn’t know better, it almost seems to be a personal attack aimed directly at Google. I wonder what Google could have done to warrant this type of divine retribution? The hackers seem to know exactly when to strike. Over the weekend on a Saturday Night. Brilliant. That way I, like so many others, can spend our Sunday afternoons cleaning up Google’s mess. Excellent.

I’ve had to move email accounts, change login account for various othet sites, update new passwords in a mad rush, all because Google has been asleep at the switch. I’ve used Gmail for about 6 years without incident, but I’m jumping ship. Having this happen once is bad luck, but twice in a month…. is a huge error on the part of Google. They are going to lose massive amounts of credibility over this. “Unknown persons managed to hack several of your user’s accounts, which are located on your servers. Twice, in the same month”. Not good.

Gamer Garb: If Clothes Make The Man
by Camille Lake

The Gameboy Tube Dress

Have you got nothing to wear, but are looking for the perfect outfit? How about this $75 dollar sexy Gameboy Tube Dress. Show your true gamer roots by sporting this fashion-forward frock.

Made by SewOeno a young lady from Cleaveland, Ohio. These hand made knit fabric dresses are very cute. A garment like this will make a bold statement. Walking into a room wearing it, people will turn and say,”What the hell have you got on?” But to those of us in the know, she would be the belle of the ball at PAX this September. Take a look at her site, where she also makes these dresses in Pink.

Pac-Man On Twitter
by Camille Lake

Pac On Twitter

This cleverly designed graphic was created by DeviantArtist chchln. Titled,”Pac on Twitter”. This item was created by the artist for fun, but labelled under Deviant Art’s T-Shirt Graphics section. This gives the impression that it is available for purchase. Sadly, there doesn’t seem to be a way of doing so. That’s too bad; I love this design and would buy it as a shirt. I have written to the artist. I’ll be sure to keep you posted, if he writes me back. In the meantime, why not look as some of his other work? He’s chchln on DeviantArt.

Rockstar: Our Games Are Not For Kids!
by Camille Lake

Rockstar’s own writer, producer Lazlow Jones has stated outright in an interview with the BBC, “If you’re a parent and buy one of our games for your child you’re a terrible parent. We design games for adults because we’re adult”.

Finally, I’m glad someone said it. Lazlow puts the blame where it should be in the first place. With the parents. If you are a parent, it is your job to raise your child, not the media. To set-up boundaries for your child and say, “No you can’t have that, because you are too young, I’m the mother/father. That’s why.”

Pac-Man has just turned 30: Happy Birthday to the old-man
by Camille Lake
Google's Pac-man Logo

Google's Pac-man Logo

Google has placed a javascript, playable Pac-Man Game using their logo as the game board. I myself, have played it 4 times. Nostalgia once again bringing me back to synthesized tones and those oh so familiar clicks and clanks. It’s hard to believe that 30 years ago today, Namco’s“Puck-Man” was released to the west as “Pac-Man”. Wonder if I should I burst in to a rendition of “Yesterday” by The Beatles? Or would “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” by Simple Minds be more appropriate?

Well, before I make anyone vomit from all this sugary sentiment, check it out and see for yourself, if you haven’t already. I’m sure Google will probably take it down tomorrow.

3D Dot Game Heroes: A Rowdy Retro Romp
by Camille Lake

If you want nostalgia, you got it. There is no denying that Atlus’ 3D Dot Game Heroes is a retro RPG gamer’s dream come true. From the look of the in-game map, to the menu system, and to the items that our Hero uses, the overall style of the game is obviously based off of the NES classic, Legend of Zelda. It’s easy to lose oneself in the nostalgia until you remember you’re holding a Playstation controller and not a classic D-Pad.

One man’s homage is another’s blatant rip-off, but if you’re willing to dig a little deeper there is so much more going on in this game than just Zelda emulation. It’s full of references to classical mythology, fantasy, and retro gaming in general, with nods toward Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Lord of the Rings, and even Futurama.

3D Dot Game Heroes is funny and clever, and it doesn’t take itself seriously, and that’s what the developers were aiming for. In one scene, the King asks, “Will you accept this dangerous quest, oh Hero of Legend?” I answered “No” and he responded, “Yeah, I know how you feel. I wouldn’t want to do that either. But the story can’t continue unless you say ‘yes’, but you knew that already didn’t you?”. Once the quest was accepted, I was told to proceed to “The Forrest of No Return”. I remembered the wise words of Professor Hubert Farnsworth: “All the planets are named like that in the Galaxy of Terror”.
