Download the Bulletstorm demo. Right now. While it downloads, I’ll explain to you why, after playing it, I now have a giant kill-boner for the game.
Bulletstorm is being developed by Polish developer People Can Fly, whose previous claim to fame was super-violent FPS Painkiller. Painkiller was loved as a cult hit because of its tons of blood, ridiculous weapons, and shameless sense of fun. Bulletstorm is being anticipated because of its tons of blood, ridiculous weapons, shameless sense of fun, and “skill shot” system that gives you bonus points based on how creative you kill people. The demo’s currently available on XBL and PSN, where you can try out that skill shot system yourself in a short, 5-minute firefight through a demolished building.
The game plays like a cross between Duke Nukem 3D and Borderlands. Crumbling planet full of psychotic, homicidal mutants? Check. Trash-talking main character (voiced by the awesome Steve Blum)? Check. Ridiculous weapons and tools including a grenade-bola gun, a plasma-grappling line, and a boot that sends people flying in the air in slow motion? Check. It’s more violent than Borderlands and more mechanically creative than Duke Nukem, and I have a feeling Greyson Hunt might end up kicking Duke’s ass come February.
I’ve seen the skill shots in action at press events over the last year, but the demo was the first time I really got a chance to try it. They’re every bit as fun as they sound. You can shoot enemies. You can kick enemies, then shoot them. You can lash enemies, kick enemies, then shoot them. You can launch them into the air and shoot them with explosives. You can use the lash to pull an enemy toward you, kick him into the air where he floats in slow motion, shoot in him the dick, shoot a flail with grenades on the end around his neck, blow his head off, and get points for mercy killing him. And that’s with 3 weapons during a 5 minute demo.
We’re looking at insane ultraviolence with a sick, addictive hook. It’s that extra bit that could push Bulletstorm from just another bloody FPS into a bloody FPS with a feature that will actually have people coming back over and over. Skill shots might be to ultraviolent what levels and custom loadouts are to realistic shooters. Give the demo a try. The game will be out on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC, but unfortunately the demo is currently only for the consoles.
Now, if you don’t mind, I have to set up a speaker next to my TV and play the demo again so I can make a ringtone out of Steve Blum shouting “Hey, dick-tits!”
