After months and months of Valve teasing us mercilessly with weeks-long previews of individual class updates to Team Fortress 2, they decided to suddenly dump a ton of new content into the game. There are several new pieces of equipment for the Soldier, Pyro, Scout, Sniper, and Spy, and if you collect all of the new equipment for each class and wear them at the same time you get a bonus. That’s the good news.

The not-so-good news is that the update introduces microtransactions for the game, so players can shell out cash for the different items instead of picking them up in servers or crafting them from unwanted gear. The items can be as cheap as $0.49 for the Rocket Jumper rocket launcher, or as much as $49.99 for the Polycount Pack, which includes every new piece of equipment in the update. You read that right. $50 for a bunch of TF2 equipment.

Now, before you freak out, according to the “Mann-conomy” FAQ, you can still pick up and craft gear for free while playing the game. The microtransactions just give you an option to get the items you want faster, in exchange for actual money. Valve says the item pickup rate hasn’t changed, so you can just keep playing like you’ve been playing and you’ll slowly and randomly collect new gear. Of course, when you keep getting griefed by a Scout with +25 max health because he shelled out $20 for the Special Delivery equipment set, that’s small solace.

The update also adds trading between players, so you can get your favorite piece of gear from your friends for free. Items you actually pay for can’t be traded.

Team Fortress 2 is just $20 on Steam, and this weekend Valve has cut the price in half. All considered, TF2 is still a great gaming deal, as long as you don’t spend too much time in the Mann Co. store. Just because all the headgear and weapons you’ve been trying to pick up on servers for months is available for a few bucks each doesn’t mean you should grab them.
