Sony’s promised Netflix application goes live today, and Nintendo has followed suit, announcing via press release that your Netflix discs are now totally obsolete. The Netflix software is now available as a free download for both consoles, but Sony is quick to point out that their service supports full 1080p video with Dolby 5.1 surround sound. The Wii obviously comes up short in that regard.

The Netflix application doesn’t take up very much space on either console, so here’s the question I now pose to you: what will you do with your useless Netflix disc? Frisbee? Coaster? Hors d’oeuvres platter? Skeet shoot? Techo-shuriken? Old-timey doctor head mirror? Unfortunately, discs are made of a mix of materials that is beyond the ability of most municipal recycling plants to process easily. There are specialized outfits that will take them for the cost of shipping, but it’s obviously more cost effective to wait until you have at least a small boxful of discs before sending it. However, you’ll have plenty to ship once the Big Three consoles go to 100% download business model for all their content.
