Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep Not “Go”ing On PSN

Bad news for PSPgo owners: Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep won't be getting a PSN-downloadable version, and will only be available as a physical UMD. Because I Told You So was the first to break the story that the expensive, download-only portable won't be getting the latest game in the Kingdom Hearts franchise. Square-Enix's public relations firm Ogilvy confirmed that there are no current plans for Birth By Sleep to show up on PSN.

This is notable because it's one of the biggest games coming to the PSP not to get a downloadable version. While other titles, like Half-Minute Hero and Dissidia: Final Fantasy, have had a delay in the transition from disc to download, there have been no notable releases to snub PSN completely.

As a major proponent of the viability of digital distribution and a major supporter of the PSPgo, I know this is upsetting. However, I believe that there is a reason for it. As we all know, the PSP is a haven for piracy. The system sells very well, but games rarely show up on monthly top 10 charts. Herein lies the reasoning that led Square-Enix to not put Birth By Sleep on PSN. When the game came out in Japan, there was no PSN version either. The game had a firmware update on the disc and, to my understanding, was extremely difficult to get running if you used custom firmware or tried to load a pirated version. I can't confirm any of this myself, but it sounds like a viable reason to not release your game. Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep brick-and-mortar stores September 7.

    What’s so funny?

  • Bill

Actually, the disc versions of games are much easier to pirate than the PSN versions.

Running 5.50 DGEN3, and had no issues playing Birth By Sleep within a week or two of release.

Looks like I’ll be playing the new kingdom hearts while my PSPgo friends sit wanting.

  • http://chatcast.podbean.com Dee Sawyer

Hmm. The places I frequent issues playing it sans disc.

    HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA

oh sony sony sony you don’t like money do you

  • http://chatcast.podbean.com Dee Sawyer

This was Square’s choice. Sony had no say in the matter.

  • F Yourself

I rage so very hard at this, the only reason I even got a PSPgo was to play this game. I was made aware that it would only be on the PSPgo and now I just wanna choke a bitch. Fuck you Sony or Square or whoever is responsible. Now you will never get my money again. Go suck a cock.

    EMPHASIZE THE RAAAAAAGGGGGGEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Main reason i bought a damn PSP was to play KH

  • Fil

Ummm peacewalker was released on psn at the same day as the umd release…. i know cause i got it on day one on psn

  • Fil

Oh yeah and UMDs are much easier to pirate from so saids the article i read sometime ago on gameinformer

  • http://chatcast.podbean.com Dee Sawyer

    You’re right. I’ll fix it.

  • http://chatcast.podbean.com Dee Sawyer

The issue isn’t whether UMD’s or downloads are harder to pirate. It’s the particular anti-piracy measures for this game that are in question. As I said, I recall people having issues getting the game to play without the UMD.

  • Ikara

Lulz, Nice Square, good show, good show. And even if the firmware update for this game has to be current, the pirates will win. So, Tough Break PSPgo Users, and I hope you see the error of the download only handheld gaming system.

    Dee Sawyer:

I’m not sure if that was true fro the Japanese version, but when the english version was leaked (before it was released mind you), although of course I didn’t play it myself because piracy is dispicable, nobody had any problem getting the english version running. Possibly the problem (well, problem for pirates anyway) has been solved by the cfw people. It was probably prometheus that solved it. The point is that doing this for piracy woud a stupid move for Square, since they didn’t update any of the anti-piracy on the disk and they MUST have known that the jap version was now playable on cfw without the disk. At least I hope companies take the time to google search stuff like that.

There has to be another reason.

Works flawlessly on CFW M33-5. The game was leaked, so people with hacked PSPs got to play the game a week early (sept. 2nd).

Firmware “DRM” isn’t hard coded onto the ISO, making it relatively simple for the hacking community to remove. Even if it were, in this specific case, the 5 extra days would be plenty of time to crack the source data by release.

Think what you will of me, people like me and those that take advantage of what is accessible to them. We aren’t thieves, instead we’re a new age of wealth distribution management; sharing media with the masses. Not just Americans, but people in Oceanic countries where they’re restricted by not only ridiculous prices, but content laws enforced by their governments. Someone that wants to play the same game as me shouldn’t have to pay $100 for the game + $85 for shipping when I can give them a copy for free.

Fuck Sony. Fuck Microsoft. Fuck nintendo. They’re all beating the casual cash cow and reaping the rewards without giving 2-shits about the customer base.

psp go digital distribution is the wave of the future, we don’t need middle men. As a steam convert i find this backwards and disheartening. What happened to square-enix, I guess the whole is lesser than the sum of its parts.

  • Sora-Vanitas

This is exactly why I didn’t buy a PSPgo. Good thing I didn’t, I was tempted to trade my PSP3000 for a Go a few months back, but then I wondered if amazing games like Kingdom Hearts Birth Sleep, and Dissidia would ever come out for PSN. Good thing I didn’t, I’m also glad Square Enix decided not to put BbS on PSN. people pirate the games, and even translate them from jap. to english; wise decision Nomura, I hope Bbs and Dissidia NEVER come out on PSN, and thus the PSPGo remains a complete failure in gaming history.

  • http://www.thechatcast.com Dee Sawyer

    1. Dissidia is on PSN.
    2. As the other commenters have noted, the piracy issue isn’t going to circumvented with one release.
    3. Nomura doesn’t make those kinds of decisions. Wada is the person to make that kind of decision. Just like when Versus inevitably gets announced for 360.

Did the PSPgo kill your dog or something? Not putting BBS on PSN was a mistake, plan and simple. The load times could have likely been at least quartered, which would have had a notable impact on the review scores. Right now, Birth isn’t the worst game in the series, but it’s certainly the one I least enjoy playing.
