Depending on your point of view, my apartment now looks either totally awesome, or like a 12 year old lives in it. This is thanks to the fresh set of New Super Mario Bros. wall decals, manufactured by Blik and provided for review by ThinkGeek. If you ever thought it would be awesome to have a huge video game mural in your room, these vinyl decals are just what you’ve been waiting for.
The Nintendo decals come in three flavors: Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros., and New Super Mario Bros. The DK and SMB sets are all classic sprites, big reproductions of the original 8-bit graphics. The NSMB set (the ones on my wall) are much smoother and artsy. Unfortunately, this means the NSMB set loses a lot of the retro appeal the other two sets have. Still, it looks nice on the wall.
The sets come in large rolled sheets, and include enough individual decals to arrange your own Mario scene on the wall. The NSMB set includes 6 brick blocks, 2 question mark blocks, 3 coins, 2 koopas (one winged red, one regular green), 4 goombas (1 winged, 3 regular), Mario, Luigi, a power-up mushroom, a 1-up mushroom, and 2 yellow and green ground panels. They’re all huge; the blocks are over 6 inches square, and Mario himself stands over 17 inches from foot to hat. Considering how many decals you get, each set is easily enough to cover a large wall with Mario.
Applying them is pretty easy. Make sure the wall is clean and dry, then just slap them on like giant stickers. The vinyl decals are reusable as long as you keep the back side free of dust. You need to be careful to avoid bubbles and to keep the different decals aligned, but it shouldn’t take more than half an hour to fully deck out your living/work space.
The only real hitch (besides, of course, the social stigma of having video game art on your walls) for these decals is the price. The SMB and NSMB sets are $70 each; not exactly cheap for wall art. On the other hand, consider how much time and money it would take to paint an awesome Nintendo mural on your wall. This is a cheap and easy alternative to getting out the paint cans and stencils. The Donkey Kong set is just $50, so if you want the old-school arcade flavor, you can save a bit of cash.
