Space Lord Mother- wait, no. Wrong Monster Magnet. These are yet another Japanese gem I picked up at Toy Tokyo, a Japanese toy store on Manhattan’s east side.
Video game magnets are fairly common, but these Dragon Quest magnets have an awesome twist. Not only does each magnet look like a 3D recreation of an 8-bit monster, but they can go on a little magnetic diorama background. If you don’t want to slap your magnets on your fridge, you can put the little metal card on its little plastic stand, and make your own Dragon Quest battle window.
Each pack comes with a pair of monster magnets, a diorama card, and a stand. I got a Dracky and a Golem, and a grass background. The card is two-sided; one side has just the background art, while the other has a little pop-up text window. If anyone reading this knows Japanese, I’d love to know what the window says.
I picked up the last magnet pack at Toy Tokyo for $8. Sadly, like the Dragon Quest slime keychains from last month, it’s very hard to find these magnets anywhere in America. If there’s a Japanese toy store or anime shop near you, give them a shot. It’s an awesome little diorama for anyone who grew up with Dragon Warrior on the NES.
