It’s taken a really, really long time for this port to come out, but Castle Crashers has finally hit PSN. At last, Playstation gamers can enjoy the same beat-em-up action Xbox gamers have been taking for granted since 2008. This is going to be a very short review because, well, everything there was to say about Castle Crashers was said two years ago when it came out on the Xbox 360.
This is more or less the exact same game as the Xbox 360 version. The minigames have been switched around, so instead of All You Can Quaff you can play a team arena mode or thvolleyball game that popped up at the end of the campaign’s desert level. The entertaining gameplay is the same. The signature Behemoth animations are the same. The lengthy campaign is the same. The dozens of characters, weapons, and animal orbs are the same (though the King and Necromancer can be unlocked in Insane mode without buying additional DLC).
Unlike the XBLA release, which had some major issues with multiplayer at the start, the PSN version has functional online play at launch. The minigame modes are entertaining for a few minutes, but the main campaign is where you’ll keep coming back with your friends. The Red, Green, Orange, and Blue Knights (or any of the game’s two dozen characters) are as entertaining and enjoyable cooperative beat-em-up avatars as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, X-Men, or Simpsons (man, Atari was awesome in the early 90′s).
That said, Castle Crashers is still an awesome game. It’s easily the best beat-em-up you can get on XBLA or PSN right now, with tons of levels and characters, a leveling system that lets you customize your minion of choice with four different stats, plenty of humorous scenes and secrets that will have you coming back for more, and an enjoyable multiplayer component. If you like arcade-style beat-em-ups and you haven’t already played Castle Crashers, you owe it to yourself to pick this game up.
