The God of War Collection has been out for a few months, and now we know the Sly Cooper trilogy is getting its own PS3 makeover. While it’s not getting specific branding in the US just yet, in Europe the Sly Cooper Collection will be labeled under the new “PS3 Classics HD” series, which indicates that Sony’s planning on bringing over some more PS2 classics.  If that’s not enough, PS3 remakes of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus have been confirmed in Europe as the Team ICO Collection, and while it hasn’t yet been confirmed for a US release it’s all but a sure thing.

That’s three classic PS2 game series either already released or confirmed as on the way (at least in Europe). This could be the start of Sony reaching back into its sizable PS2 library and digging around for classics to put out again. If course, if Sony didn’t abandon PS2 backwards compatibility on the PS3 within two years of its release, it wouldn’t be necessary, but I can’t complain too much about a reasonably-priced compilation of games with slightly enhanced graphics.

What’s on the way, though? Besides the three series, Sony hasn’t made a peep about any other remakes. Still, Europe is getting a “PS3 Classics HD” label, which implies that the company is working on more games. Obviously, these will probably be SCEA-published titles, but anything’s possible. What could be on the way? Let’s look at some candidates.

Jak & Daxter: Popular series, a handful of solid titles, published by SCEA. If Sony’s really running with the PS2-PS3 remake ball, the next collection will either be Jak & Daxter or…

Ratchet & Clank: Once again, a popular series with a bunch of great games that were published by Sony. As a bonus, there are already two Ratchet & Clank games on the PS3, so a retrospective would dovetail nicely into the two current-gen R&T games and any new titles Insomniac Games plans to work on.

SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs: A fairly solid chance. It’s not the most popular series, but four games on the PS2, two games on the PS3, and the “Sony Computer Entertainment America” logo on the box means it’s a prime candidate for a PS3 remake collection.

Devil May Cry: Great game series with a trilogy on the PS2 and a popular, greatest hits title on the PS3. Sadly, Capcom makes Devil May Cry, so it probably won’t get a Sony re-publishing.

Metal Gear Solid: MGS4 is one of the biggest titles on the PS3 and the MGS series has been a system-selling franchise since the original Playstation. The first Metal Gear Solid game has already seen a graphically enhanced update as well, with The Twin Snakes on the Gamecube. Unfortunately, Solid Snake is Konami’s baby, and after E3 it looks like the next MGS remakes will come out on the 3DS, not the PS3.

What PS2 series do you want to see come to the PS3 in remake form?
