Cube Warfare: Accessorizing your gun

You might have noticed that most Nerf N-Strike guns have the same strange rails on their barrels. They aren't there for style; they're for mounting after-market accessories. Yes, Nerf makes an entire line of N-Strike accessories for your guns, and they range from totally useless to... slightly less useless.

Let's get one thing out of the way: scopes are pointless on a Nerf gun. They're too weak and unreliable to get any accurate performance. Still, they're fun to play with, and that's the entire point of playing with Nerf guns.

Prince of Persia: So close, yet so far

[This review has a few spoilers. They're not particularly interesting spoilers that reveal anything you won't pick up on five minutes into the movie, but heads up anyway.]

Once again, Hollywood has taken a video game full of opportunity for action-packed fight scenes, special effects and other summer blockbuster fodder, and spent $200 million turning it into a thoroughly mediocre action film that completely misses the game's point.

On paper, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time showed potential. Director Mike Newell and producer Jerry Bruckheimer gathered together big-name actors, a huge special effects budget, and at least a passing understanding that the movie needed parkour and time travel elements, and then showed that they had absolutely no idea what to do with any of it.

Mass Effect is coming to the big screen, for some reason

Mass Effect 2 Screenshot

Legendary Pictures has acquired the rights to bring Mass Effect to the big screen. Thomas Tull, who is the producer, said in a statement, "Mass Effect is ripe for translation to the big screen. We already have Mark Protosevich, the writer of I Am Legend, working on a draft of the screen play".

Well, this all sounds interesting, I guess. I'm sure we'll all be looking forward to a non-sucking video game movie. However, my hopes are not high.

Pokemon Black and White are coming

Surprise! Nintendo is making a new game in one of its most successful franchises! The announcement of Pokemon Black and Pokemon White isn't exactly surprising, but it's still news.

Nintendo is keeping schtum on the games' features for now. All the company has announced is that the games will be on the Nintendo DS and that they will feature the new legendary Pokemon Zekrom (White version) and Rerisham (Black) version. We can safely assume that it will have the same Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for worldwide trading and battles that the series had has since Diamond and Pearl, but the questions of whether the Pokewalker will return, what region the game will take place in, which increasingly ridiculous Team (Something) will serve as antagonist still go unanswered.

It will probably be the same predicable fun as every other Pokemon game since Red/Blue. Still, does anyone else think that Rerisham looks like a lanky palette swap of Palkia from Pokemon Pearl?

Friday Flashback: Rock n’ Roll Racing

Take the isometric perspective of Super Off-Road, the cutthroat weapons-based combat of Mario Kart and Wipeout, and the most hilariously "extreme" 90's style of Rob Liefeld's worst nightmares and you have Rock n' Roll Racing, one of the best games to come from Blizzard before it was even called Blizzard.

Yes, this utterly rad SNES and Sega Genesis racer (not to be confused with the much less rad Rad Racer) was made by Silicon & Synapse, the developers that would eventually become Blizzard Entertainment. You select from six racers (seven if you input a special code to play as Olaf from The Lost Vikings) and crash your way around a wide variety of track-filled planets. There's a fire planet, an ice planet, a desert planet, and a creepy dark black light planet, all with their own hazard-filled tracks and menacing AI "villains."

Deals: 3D Dot Game Heroes and God of War III for cheap, plus $10 gift certificates

3D Dot Game Heroes is a wicked sweet game, especially for nostalgic fans of the 8- and 16-bit Zelda games. It's also a very new game, and for the time being it can be found for very little money. The already bargain-priced $40 game has been chopped down to $30 at Gamestop, and with the coupon code 2D15, that drops down to $25.50 with free shipping. Better yet, it also comes with a $10 code for a future purchase at Gamestop, which significantly sweetens the already wicked sweet deal. Unfortunately, you have to order online to get the full discount and $10 certificate, and the game is currently backordered. If you have some patience, though, it's a bargain.

God of War III has also seen a price cut and can now be picked up for $40, though if you order online and use the same 2D15 coupon code that price becomes $34 with free shipping, and you get the same $10 certificate as 3D Dot Game Heroes.

From the Game: WoW’s Tankard O’ Terror

You have many choices when drinking a beverage. There are cups. There are glasses. There are mugs. There are steins. And then there are tankards. The very word conjures up the image of something between a mug and a tank. When a tankard is based off of an item in World of Warcraft, you have a vessel worthy of From the Game.

This is the Tankard O' Terror, a huge tankard made by 3Point Entertainment, a company that produces an entire line of World of Warcraft beer steins. Amazingly, the TOT is the least expensive, largest, and most game-accurate product the company offers.

Split/Second: A kart racer in a car racer’s body

There are two types of racing games: simulation racers and arcade racers. Simulation racers commit to getting every single detail of the driving experience accurate, from driving physics that make your Acura RSX perform just like a real Acura RSX to massive amounts of fine-tuning using brand-name after-market parts to change the most minute aspects of your vehicle. Arcade racers let you drive around really fast and do stuff.

If you're looking for an accurate driving simulation, then pass right on by Disney Interactive's Split/Second. If you want to drive around really fast and watch things blow up, you're going to like this game.
