As soon as I saw Nerf’s Marauder long sword, I knew I had to use it to slay Ganon. Its profile screamed “Master Sword,” so I decided to get some paint and see how well I could spruce it up. I’m fairly pleased with the results. It’s loosely based off of the Master Sword from Ocarina of Time, but I used the Marauder’s own design to guide the gold highlights, and I filled in the Triforce so it would look a bit more interesting.
The entire project took over a week, but most of it was either watching paint dry or experimenting with different paints. The entire paintjob is probably less than an hour of total work, plus drying time. The blade is covered in Craft Smart Metallic Silver (23724) craft paint, the handle is covered in Rust-oleum Painter’s Touch deep blue spray paint, and the Triforce and handle highlights were painted on with Games Workshop burnished gold (61-62) miniature paint.
The entire project cost about $35 total, including the sword itself and the various paints. For a convention-ready (or wall-ready, or nerd slap-fight-ready) prop that looks fairly decent, it’s not a bad deal.
